Accessible and Compliant Websites

Case Study: Bar Pro Bono

The Bar Pro Bono Unit is a charity which helps to find pro bono (free) legal assistance from volunteer barristers. It is imperative for such websites to be fully accessible, as they expect site visitors of all descriptions - people using different devices (e.g. PDAs), the visually impared, the hard of hearing and those simply not used to using the internet or even a computer.

TRIBiQ helps to make the site accesible by conforming to worldwide standards such as the WAI, Section 508 and SENDA. We can develop websites that adhere to the following rules of accessibility:

  1. Images & animations use the alt attribute to describe the function of each visual.
  2. Multimedia provides captioning and transcripts of audio, and descriptions of video.
  3. Hypertext links use text that makes sense when read out of context. For example, we try to avoid "click here."
  4. We use headings, lists, and consistent structure. We use CSS for layout and style where possible.
  5. Graphs & charts are summarized and we use the longdesc attribute.
  6. Scripts, applets, & plug-ins provide alternative content in case active features are inaccessible or unsupported.
  7. Tables make line-by-line reading sensible and are summarized.
  8. We check our work through validation tools, checklists, and guidelines.

A helping "touch"

TRIBiQ can also implement a range of additional features which will put your website in the premier league of accessible websites. The Bar Pro Bono website contains a unique "Text Size" function which allows users to decrease or increase the size of text - perfect for browsers on PDAs and perfect for visually impaired people.

Bar Pro Bono also makes use of the built-in Quick Access Key feature of TRIBiQ CMS, allowing them to assign keyboard shortcuts to each Menu Item for ease of accessibility.
